Douglas County voters have the opportunity to approve two
questions on the November 2008 ballot to maintain and improve
our public education system.
3A $17 million budget question to increase the district’s
operational budget.
- Maintain and improve academic performance.
- Recruit and retain the best work force.
- Maintain and improve technology.
- Strategically respond to intense enrollment growth.
3B $395 million bond question:
- To build 10 new elementary schools.
- Renovations to update, repair and/or expand almost 50
schools.
- Technology infrastructure (Wide Area Network, etc.)
improvements for ALL schools.
- Strategically begin to move all elementary schools off
4-track.
The combined cost of
both measures (4
mils) is 33 cents a day or $10 a month for the average Douglas
County homeowner.
Douglas County School District continues to grow.
- School population is expected to grow an average 2,000
students per year through 2012.
- DCSD is expected to have an enrollment of almost 54,000
students in 2008-09.
- DCSD has reached a “tipping point” on its use of
4-track, year-round elementary schools to manage growth.
Operational expenses now equal or exceed costs to build the
needed space.
- DCSD uses almost 100 mobile classrooms across the
District.
Douglas County School District is one of the highest
achieving school districts in Colorado.
- DCSD topped the metro area in 24 out of 27 tests
assessed by CSAP.
- ACT results exceeded the state average by 1.8-2.0
percentage points.
- 92% of DCSD schools are rated Excellent or High by the
Colorado Department of Education.
DCSD receives the lowest state formula per pupil funding
in the Denver Metro Area.
