Douglas County voters have the opportunity to approve two questions on the November 2008 ballot to maintain and improve our public education system.

3A $17 million budget question to increase the district’s operational budget.

  • Maintain and improve academic performance.
  • Recruit and retain the best work force.
  • Maintain and improve technology.
  • Strategically respond to intense enrollment growth.

3B $395 million bond question:

  • To build 10 new elementary schools.
  • Renovations to update, repair and/or expand almost 50 schools.
  • Technology infrastructure (Wide Area Network, etc.) improvements for ALL schools.
  • Strategically begin to move all elementary schools off 4-track.

The combined cost of both measures (4 mils) is 33 cents a day or $10 a month for the average Douglas County homeowner.

Douglas County School District continues to grow.

  • School population is expected to grow an average 2,000 students per year through 2012.
  • DCSD is expected to have an enrollment of almost 54,000 students in 2008-09.
  • DCSD has reached a “tipping point” on its use of 4-track, year-round elementary schools to manage growth. Operational expenses now equal or exceed costs to build the needed space.
  • DCSD uses almost 100 mobile classrooms across the District.

Douglas County School District is one of the highest achieving school districts in Colorado.

  • DCSD topped the metro area in 24 out of 27 tests assessed by CSAP.
  • ACT results exceeded the state average by 1.8-2.0 percentage points.
  • 92% of DCSD schools are rated Excellent or High by the Colorado Department of Education.

DCSD receives the lowest state formula per pupil funding in the Denver Metro Area.
